Absenteeism.

                              EFFECT AND CAUSES OF ABSENTEEISM.

 

Abstract.

Absenteeism is a serious workplace problem and it’s an expense for the employee and employer. It’s unpredictable in nature. The term absenteeism refers to the failure to attend to work. It’s one of the major problems faced by companies across the globe today. Unscheduled absenteeism badly hurts the progress of the organization resulting in loss of product quality and quantity. It’s created an unimaginable loss to the company and its growth.

Introduction.

Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligations without informing their superior or Organization Absenteeism is when an employee consistently does not appear for work at their scheduled time. This is true for both full-time and shift-working employees .and it is generally unplanned and without good reason.

Type of Absenteeism.

Absences that will require some type of employer intervention are split into two different categories   According to the “Human resources professionals suggest that there is two kinds of absenteeism Culpable absenteeism is absenteeism when the employee doesn’t provide a legitimate reason for missing work. On-culpable absenteeism is absenteeism when the employee does give a legitimate reason for missing work (Douglas. Hawks, 2015).

Cause of absenteeism.

People miss working for a variety of reasons many of which are legitimate others generally are not some of the common causes not limited.

1.       sickness

2.       Burnout, stress, and low morale

3.       Depression and bad mental health

4.       Childcare and eldercare

5.       Jobhunting

6.       Disengagement

7.       Bullying and harassment in the workplace

8.       Injuries

9.       shift works

How to Reduce absenteeism.

Based on the research there are several common reasons for absenteeism. Interventions or HR policies that counteract these effects can be good at reducing absenteeism in the workplace. You won’t able to completely solve the problem but you can reduce it.

      1.   Washing hands significantly reduces absence during the influenza season.

Currently Covid-19 pandemic it is that we should wash our hands for at least 20 seconds. Although results are mixed during the normal season, during the flu season, washing hands significantly reduces the rate of infections. Putting up signs for people to wash their hands when they come into the office, after going to the restroom, or before having lunch are easy but effective interventions.

   2.     Exercise frequency. 

          Maintaining healthy lifestyles as well as life and work balance Some study showed that even                  exercising just once a week already lead to a decrease of 30% in absence.

3.       Create a clear attendance policy.

Workers should know exactly about the policy company must follow up and monitor the absences by the report and as well as a KPI  in the company.

4.        Reward for the good attendance.

Implementing a rewards scheme for the employee with good attendance monthly basis.

5.       Address unsanctioned absences immediately.

The company should deal with absenteeism according to the policy and inquiry the absenteeism and understand the employee problems and give a good solution to overcome their issues

6.       Improve employee well-being.

Arranging a good working environment to keep their physical and mental health at a good level implementing wellness programs.

  7. Encourage employee engagement.

       A good way to make your staff more committed and actually want to come to work is to increase their engagement. Employee training programs birthday celebrations and more in organizational activities. And create a good culture in the company.

8.       Foster teamwork culture.

Following up on the previous idea, the employee is more engaged when they feel that they are part of the team a sense of belonging increases a worker’s motivation to go to work and their loyalist towards the company and create the feeling of the ownership mentality than before taking un plan day off they will things more difficult for their team.

9.  provide feedback.

       Let your employees know that they can improve, but also, they do right indeed providing guidance and encouragement make the employee feel motivated it will push them to give their best and want to improve their performance, making them less to miss work.

Conclusion.

Absenteeism is a global problem in every organization we have seen it has cost a lot of money and has a severe impact on the companies’ growths and goals. Most of the companies this index is highlighting to the HR Department handle and short it out. management needs to understand the consequences of absenteeism. And whole management team to act to reduce absenteeism by reacting in time.

  1. Absenteeism is a burning issue mainly in manufacturing facilities. Planned and unplanned legitimate reasons are unavoidable and manageable. But illegitimate reasons will effect to the production and ultimately effect the company performance.

  3. Absenteeism is the lack of discipline this can happen due to guilty feeling of a poor performance, if they aren't falling to right path, management should act fast to get rid of those.

  4. When employees are satisfied with the job, the absenteeism rate will be less. So when absenteeism increases the productivity level of the employees decreases which reduces to performance of the organization as well. Organizations have to focus on satisfying employees to overcome such issues.

Absenteeism is always had been and will be a big head ache to all Leaders/managers of any organization, where it hampers the planned day to day initiatives and could ruin the smooth process of their business. hence, strict measures must be taken after a careful review of who are the usual absentees and must find out the causes behind that and must support the employees in their need.
